The US Department of Commerce has designated Grant County as one of eight counties in Washington State that will receive preference on approximately $1.3 billion in grants from 11 federal agencies.

Grant County’s designation comes as part of the Puget Sound Regional Council’s (PSRC) designation as one of 12 national Manufacturing Communities. The PSRC Manufacturing Community represents over 132,000 aerospace related employees and more than 1,350 aerospace firms, the largest aerospace cluster in the world.

In order to earn the designation, the PSRC Manufacturing Community had to demonstrate the significance of the aerospace manufacturing already present in the region and develop strategies for investments in six areas: 1) workforce and training, 2) advanced research, 3) infrastructure and site development, 4) supply chain support, 5) trade and international investment, 6) operational improvement and capital access.

In addition to receiving preference on Federal grants, The PSRC Manufacturing Community will also receive a dedicated federal liaison at each of the 11 agencies that will help it navigate available federal resources.

These agencies are the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Delta Regional Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation, the Small Business Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“It is exciting to be selected as one of only 12 communities out of the 70 that applied for this designation,” said Jonathan Smith, Executive Director of the Grant County Economic Development Council. “This demonstrates the importance of the Washington aerospace industry and provides us with access to resources to make this industry even stronger.”
